Tonneau covers come in two different varieties: hard tonneau covers and soft tonneau covers. Hard tonneau covers are usually made up of fiberglass, polymer, aluminum or ABS plastic. They are usually equipped with security features such as lock systems or latch systems which only allow you to access your truck bed by opening the tailgate and releasing the latch. Soft tonneau covers, on the other hand, are made up of vinyl, leather or faux leather and can be rolled up or folded up. While some of these tonneau covers come with latch systems same as those hard folding tonneau covers, others are only secured to the tailgate with Velcro or hooks.
But which is better: hard tonneau covers or soft tonneau covers? The answer will depend on a lot of factors. The first one would be the budget. Soft tonneau covers are a cheaper option as they only cost about $500 at most. On the other hand, hard tonneau covers cost at least $700, depending on what they are made of. While most would prefer the latter, they often overlook some of the perks of having a soft tonneau cover. First of, soft tonneau covers are lighter. Hence, they have better chances of increasing your truck’s fuel efficiency as the added weight of most hard top tonneau covers cancels out its aerodynamic features.
Apart from that, soft tonneau covers are flexible, so you will be allowed to access your entire truck bed by folding or rolling back your tonneau cover against the back of the truck cab. They are also lighter so it’s easier to install it to your truck with little or no help from anyone. The only disadvantage of soft tonneau covers is that they are not puncture proof and may not be able to withstand the harshest weather conditions and elements unlike hard tonneau covers. Aside from that, most if not all tend to shrink or expand during winter or summer.
However, when it comes to security, hard bed covers are still king. These tonneau covers may have lock systems which require a separate key, or has a latch system (for folding tonneau covers) which only allows you access to your entire bed by unlocking the tailgate and releasing the latch. Apart from that, you get more space to accommodate other cargo such as your bicycle, which you can secure with a rope on the hooks underneath the rails of your truck bed. And since they are more durable than soft tonneau covers, they are guaranteed to stay as good as new even after years, depending on how well you take care of your tonneau cover.
